"The Amtrak Stations database is a geographic data set containing Amtrak intercity railroad passenger terminals." "Attribute data include services and passenger amenities provided at the station."
Data includes Amtrak railroad including some old stations that closed. Data currentness is reported at July 2000. Data does not include regional commuter railroad stations that also serve as Amtrak service, only stations in the Fixed-Guideway Transit Network. See Completeness report for more detail on station inclusion.
"The data set provides location and attribute information for use in national and regional cartographic and network analysis applications."
"Acknowledgment of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics National Transportation Atlas Database should be cited in products derived from these data."
"Attribute data were extracted from the station listings in the Spring/Summer 2000 Amtrak National and Summer/Fall 2000 Amtrak Northeast Timetables, and reflect station characteristics as of July 9, 2000. Additional data, as required, were obtained from earlier year timetables."
Bureau of Transportation Statistics metadata reports -
"All point records are represented by a single coordinate pair and a unique feature identifier; the Amtrak Station Code (stored in the FEATURID field). Attribute data can be matched to specific point records using this identifier."
"The database includes all Amtrak railroad and thruway bus stations listed in the Amtrak timetables mentioned above. Also included are 1)Amtrak railroad stations listed in earlier releases of this database that are now closed and 2) future Amtrak stations that can be identified from either their inclusion in the timetables or published intentions to increase Amtrak service. Regional commuter railroad stations that are not also served by Amtrak are not included in this version; those stations are currently included in the Fixed-Guideway Transit Network database. The database does not include information on passenger boarding's; those data are considered to be proprietary by Amtrak."
"Stations having valid street addresses were geocoded to 1995 TIGER/Line(TM)street and railroad centerline files. Positional accuracy for those points is consistent with the accuracy of 1995 TIGER/Line(TM) files, or within about 50 meters of their true position. Stations with ambiguous or incomplete street addresses were positioned using a combination of street name, nearest railroad centerline, and place name. Positional accuracy for these points may vary from 100 to 1000 meters of their true location. The PA attribute indicates the estimated 'goodness' of the location."
"Each Amtrak railroad or thruway bus station identified in the Amtrak Timetables was initially geocoded based on its street address and ZIP Code, using the geocoding procedures in TransCAD (TM) software and the TIGER/Line(TM) 1995 street centerline databases. Stations with ambiguous street addresses were then located using a combination of geographic cues, including location of nearest railroad tracks, location of Standard Point Location Code (SPLC) place names, location of Census Named Places, and commercial road atlases. Stations with no street address and stations located in Canada were manually located based on place name and location of nearest railroad service."
